Charcon provides new modern public realm

Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has developed and supplied a bespoke permeable flag paver for phase 1 of Haringey Council’s White Hart Lane public realm improvement project. Phase one was completed in September 2018 and complements a separate £800 million pound project which will see the Tottenham Hotspur Football stadium and surrounding residential areas completely transformed.

Through a long-established relationship with muf architecture/art, Charcon was approached to design and supply a high quality concrete permeable flag paver with aesthetic appeal. Works entailed the widening and reconstruction of various footways, but predominately the repaving of the busy thoroughfare between Creighton Road and High Road, the main route between the station and the stadium on match day.

The Charcon team recommended Andover Washed Infilta flag paving due to its tough and hard-wearing characteristics, alongside its ability to allow water to permeate through the joints and into the sub base, thereby creating a sustainable drainage system. This element became a key priority in order to avoid local flooding in the area. Available in eight shades, muf architecture/art who designed the scheme in partnership with Civic Engineers and Robert Bray Associates, opted for Silver Grey, creating a visually appealing and contemporary backdrop.

A particular challenge regarding the hard landscaping element was sourcing a bespoke paver size which would offer flexibility when it came to laying and also vastly reduce cutting requirements for the more intricate areas of the walkways.

Clinton Young, National Specification Manager at Charcon, comments: “Although we already stock seven different sizes of Andover Washed, we were more than happy to invest in a new mould in order to create the exact specification and size required for the project.”

Peter Watson, Project Manager Major Projects at LB of Haringey Council comments: “As part of our tender process, we contacted various suppliers however Charcon were the only business who were willing to go above and beyond and work on a bespoke solution for the job. Our experience told us that we needed permeable paving for the carriageway as the area was prone to flooding and Charcon were able to deliver a quality solution that not only provided suitable drainage, but looked aesthetically pleasing.”

Clinton Young adds: “This has been a brilliant scheme to work on. At Charcon, we have a proven track record of providing hard landscaping and sustainable drainage solutions which are proving hugely successful in a variety of schemes across the country. With the proposed increase in footfall from the station to the stadium, we welcome the opportunity to showcase the performance and durability of our SuDS offer within a busy and prestigious pedestrian setting.”

In total, 2,288m2 of Andover Washed Infilta in Silver Grey was supplied in the footways, along with 2,061m2 of matching Andover Washed 100mm x 200mm Silver Grey block paving in the carriageway.

The final phase of the project is underway, with expected completion in early 2019 and Charcon will be supplying further hard landscaping products for the public realm improvements.
